Crystall  White Winkler, Biography

Founder/Director

Crystall White Winkler, B.A., M.S., completed her Bachelors Degree at Olivet                                      College in Olivet, MI and later completed  her Master’s Degree                                                              at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania.  She began studying dance at age                                    8 in Detroit under the direction and tutelage of Gwendolyn B. Smith at Northwest School of Dance throughout her high school years. Att age 13, she augmented her training at Marygrove College in Detroit with Madame Penny Godboldo as another one of her mentors and dance trainers, and later after her freshman year of college, she moved to New York City to study dance at the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Center.

In 1991, Crystall embarked upon a dance school partnership in the city of Southfield with her former dance teacher Gwendolyn Smith and childhood friend and fellow dancer, Teresa White where they successfully operated Artistry in Motion Dance School together for nearly 10 years and set a new standard for dance in the Detroit Metropolitan area before dissolving their partnership in 2001. During their tenure together, Crystall, Gwen and Teresa turned out numerous award winning competitive dance teams, successful teachers, Cecchetti students and hundreds of well trained students embracing the love of dance.

Crystall has performed in countless performances incorporating all forms of dance including Modern, Jazz, African, Dunham Technique and Ballet at Marygrove College where she has been a featured dancer as well as performing member of the corps. Crystall has also had the rare opportunity to tour with the European Tour of Broadway’s“Black and Blue” where she traveled to Switzerland, Germany and France, performing the world famous choreography of Herny LaTang and Cholly Atkins.  Crystall has also toured with, “Tap Girls” in Lake Tahoe, NV, Los Angeles, CA and Atlantic City, NJ.  Additionally, Crystall was a performer and guest choreographer for the Los Angeles Academy of Fine Arts Chocolate Nutcracker narrated by Debbie Allen. In addition to all of Crystall’s performing credits she has choreographed, directed and staged numerous recitals, full length dance productions and local performances of the classical ballet, “The Nutcracker”.  Crystall is a true dance enthusiast and wishes to share her love of learning and discipline for the great art form of dance with students everywhere.

In 2004, Crystall co-Founded and co-Directed The Zone Dance Center, LLC in Southfield for 7 years with long time friend and colleague, Tammy Hawkins. Upon departing from this venture, Crystall set out on her own, which lead her to open Legacy Dance Studio, LLC in August of 2011 as the sole Founder, Owner and Director. Ms. Crystall is a Cecchetti trained and Certified ballet teacher and also teaches tap, jazz and competition classes. She works with students of all ages and levels. Legacy Dance Studio, LLC provides an outlet for creativity, originality and imagination, as it has pushed the limits of perseverance, development and discipline as a Teacher, Director and Entrepreneur.

In addition to dance, Crystall’s corporate background includes many years in the Pharmaceutical Industry as a Senior Sales Representative for Astra-Zeneca and Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals. In July of 2007, Crystall had the rare opportunity to open The Studio Dance Rack, a dancewear retail store and claiming the title of the first-ever-African-American Dancewear Retailer in Michigan with the support of her husband, Timothy Winkler, Sr., her family and the dance community.

Most recently, Crystall debuted the first-ever, world premiere of The Motown Nutcracker, a soulful twist of the classic Nutcracker ballet where a young girl from Detroit by the name of Diana receives a gift of a Motown Nutcracker Doll from her mysterious Uncle Sammy who traveled all the way from Las Vegas to delight Diana and all of her guests. The Motown Nutcracker is now an annual family soul classic for all to enjoy!

After being in the Dance School industry for over 35 years as a student, a teacher, a performer and a dance school owner, she knew that everything related to dance was her passion and focus for life. Presently, Legacy Dance Studio, LLC is well into it’s second year of operation and already our students have performed, competed, have participated in Master Classes and won scholarships from dance conventions like Kids Artistic Revue and Hall of Fame! Legacy Dance Studio offers students of all ages and levels the opportunity to dance while promoting self-confidence, grace and empowerment!  I want my students to be inspired by greatness and not victims of doubt and low self-esteem. “I look forward to mentoring your child’s dance education and pushing them beyond their potential here at Legacy!”
